Interview with Fabio Sandrin
December 2022

we.CONECT: The pop in your job – you work as Senior Director, Digital Workforce for Banner Health – what is most exciting about your role, and why are you passionate about your job?

Tyson Henrie: I am passionate about making caregivers’ jobs easier, so they can be freed up for quality patient care. It is exciting to have an impact on making Banner Health a better place to work through great digital experiences.

we.CONECT: You will present “Building an award-winning intranet to empower caregivers with digital experiences they deserve” at Intranet Reloaded USA 2023. How would you define your approach?

Tyson Henrie: First and foremost we aimed to deliver a top-notch design and user experience. Banner employees had gone 15 years without an intranet refresh, and the site’s clunkiness was a disappointing contrast compared to the digital experiences employees came to expect on their personal devices at home. We knew a design overhaul could drastically improve the usability of this central employee resource and create a solid foundation for our authors and stakeholders to publish content easily consumable on both desktop and mobile.

we.CONECT: What are the biggest difficulties in this regard? What do you see as particularly problematic?

Tyson Henrie: There are industry-related challenges to making the digital employee experience better within healthcare systems. Rolling out a new intranet to healthcare workers in the middle of a pandemic was quite a feat. Challenges included finding the right change management approach, technical and logistical hurdles, internal political concerns, and a few unexpected issues that delayed our rollout. At the beginning, obtaining the funds to build a compelling intranet was a challenge. Each of these were overcome in their own way, which we may address in the presentation.

we.CONECT: Looking to the future, what topics and upcoming trends in intranet and internal communications do you expect in the next 12 months – how will the industry develop?

Tyson Henrie: I expect a continued focus on how digital employee experience can improve employee well-being, in addition to the hot topic of hybrid work challenges and solutions.

we.CONECT: What are your learning expectations from the event? Which topics are particularly important for you?

Tyson Henrie: I’m eager to see ideas and successes shared by other companies to inspire ideas for us to try at Banner Health, especially in the areas of enterprise search and employee mobile experiences.
